People's Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday staged a protest march here against the killing of Palestinians by Israel and appealed to the Centre to seek an emergency meeting of the United Nations over the matter.

Scores of PDP activists assembled at the party headquarters here and took out a procession amid tight police protection to lodge a protest against the killing of Palestinians over the past week.

Chanting slogans in solidarity with the Palestinians, the protesters dispersed off peacefully at Regal Chowk near the City Centre after covering over half-a-km distance.

The march was led by senior party leaders Zaffar Iqbal Manhas, state secretary Abdul Hameed Kosheen, co-ordination secretary Mohammad Khurshid Alam and youth president Wahid ur Rehman Parra.

The PDP leaders called on the Union government to "immediately intervene into the matter and help end the killing of men, women and children in Gaza".

"As the largest democracy of the world, India can't remain a mute spectator to this aggression by Israel," they said.

They urged India to take serious note of the issue and help in convening an emergency meeting of the United Nations.

The PDP leaders also called on Israel to show restraint, saying, "It is only through sincere dialogue and democracy we could resolve conflicts no matter how old and tough they are." Meanwhile, reports of peaceful protests were also reported from different parts of Srinagar and other major towns of the Valley over the issue.

Protests, which were called by hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, ended peacefully. As many as 192 people in Palestine have so far lost their lives in Israel's military action.
