Pressure is mounting on the legislators to quit after PDP member of parliament Tariq Hameed Karra resigned from Lok Sabha in protest against the wanton killings by security forces.

"For the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, people of Kashmir were forced not to offer Eid prayers. Certain shrines and grand mosque even locked...My conscience cannot take it any longer... As a mark of protest on moral grounds against the brutal policies of BJP at centre and state government sell out and surrender before them I have decided to disassociate myself from Primary membership of PDP and membership of parliament to which I was elected from Srinagar parliamentary constituency", Karra said.

Karra's resignation has stirred hornet's nest with pressure mounting on legislators of other pro India parties to follow the suit and register their protest by quitting their seats.

Independent MLA from Langate and architect of Save Afzal Guru resolution Sheikh Abdul Rasheed aka Engineer Rasheed said though he has kept the option of quitting open, he believes that only collective resignations by legislators will make the bigger impact and help the Kashmir cause.

"During the meeting of opposition I had proposed that we should offer mass resignation. I am still hopeful that there will be collective decision. I feel individual resignation may not help but if we resign en mass it will help Kashmir cause and resolution of the vexed issue", he said.

Premier opposition party National Conference said Karra's resignation reflected the gravity of the situation in Kashmir and the enormity and scale of dissatisfaction, both against PDP and within PDP, for its complete sell out.

"National Conference has not asked for the dismissal of the state government nor have we asked Mehbooba Mufti to resign. These calls are coming from the topmost leaders in her own party. It is for her own conscience to decide what she would like to do. What lessons she would draw from Karra's resignation is a matter of her conscience and morality," said Junaid Azim Mattu, National Conference state spokesman.

PDP, which has 28 MLAs in 87 member elected house, played down the matter saying its alliance with BJP does not have a limited scope of the government formation but its aim was to eliminate hostility between different regions of the state and remove trust deficit between people of Kashmir and the rest of the country.

"Compared to the happenings of 2008 and 2010 the trouble this time has remained confined only to Kashmir and rest of the state with community composition remained peaceful...It is unfortunate that Karra has chosen to label unfounded allegations despite the fact that he strongly advocated alliance with BJP," said Nizam-ud-din Bhat, general secretary of PDP.

However insiders said some of the loyalist MLAs of Karra have raised a banner of revolt against the party leadership over the use of force against people

"They are pressuring the party leadership to take corrective measures otherwise they may also be forced to take drastic steps," said a top PDP leader.
