Renowned lyricist and Rajya Sabha lawmaker Javed Akhtar on Tuesday said that the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has no right to demand the mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru adding that only the parents of the latter had the right to do so.

"What right does PDP has to demand Afzal Guru's mortal remains? It is a right of his family. If Afzal's family is demanding his mortal remains, they should be handed over; no issue should be made out of it," said Akhtar. Earlier on Monday, a group of PDP MLAs demanded that the mortal remains of Afzal Guru be handed over to his family.

"PDP maintained that late Afzal Guru's hanging was travesty of justice and constitutional process was not followed", and this was repeated in the alleged PDP note. The note has the endorsement of nine PDP leaders. Afzal Guru was convicted in the 2003 Parliament attack case and was hanged secretly in Delhi's Tihar Jail on February 9 last year.
