Picking up threads from when she visited families of terrorists, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has gone into an overdrive demanding the release of Moderate Hurriyat leader Shahid-ul-Islam. Shahid was arrested by the NIA in a terror funding case in 2017 when Mehbooba was the chief minister.

Mehbooba called Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and urged him to release Shahid on humanitarian grounds as his wife has suffered brain haemorrhage.

"I share your concern for Shahid-ul-Islam. Have spoken with Home Minister requesting for his early release on humanitarian grounds as his wife has suffered a brain haemorrhage," Mehbooba tweeted.

Aftab Hilali Shah aka Shahid-ul-Islam, who is the media advisor to Moderate Hurriyat Conference, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) along with six other separatist leaders in July 2017 in the terror funding case.

Last year, Islam's two daughters — Suzanne and Sundas — had written an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking humane treatment to their father who is lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail.

"Not only are they political prisoners, but their families are going through a continuous trauma. The prolonged illegal detention of media advisor Shahid-ul-Islam has given rise to serious concerns about his health. His detention has also taken a toll on his family as his wife recently suffered a major brain stroke and had to be hospitalised," said a Moderate Hurriyat Conference spokesman.

On the other side, the recently elected Deputy Mayor of Srinagar Sheikh Mohommad Imran has sought the intervention of J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik to secure the release of Shahid-ul-Islam.

Imran, who visited Shahid's home to inquire about the health of his wife, said the family of the Hurriyat leader is facing severe hardships and is demanding his release on humanitarian grounds.
