The standoff between Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and BJP has deepened after two senior ministers and CM Mehbooba Mufti’s close aide warned against the “competitive communal politics” being played over the rape and murder of the eight year old tribal girl in Hiranagar, Kathua in January.

The CPI (M)’s J&K unit too alleged that some people were trying to give a “communal colour” to the incident. “These fringe elements are committing a heinous crime against the humanity,” CPI (M)’s Jammu regional committee secretary Sham Prasad Kesar said. He further added, “It is an irony that the (BJP) ministers are questioning the probe ordered by the state, of which they are the part. The crime branch is a professional state agency. Even the BJP has officially issued a statement, saying what was the objection to hand over the case to the CBI. Why is the BJP and its two ministers questioning the credibility of state institutions?”

This follows the participation of two senior BJP leaders including Forest Minister Lal Singh and Industries Minister Chander Prakash Ganga in the rally of Hindu Ekta Manch (HEM) to support the demand for CBI probe into the rape and murder of the eight year old tribal girl.

Breaking silence, senior PDP leaders including Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Works Naeem Akhtar and Minister for Education Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari expressed serious concern over the attempts being made to “politicise” an inhuman criminal act in Kathua. “It is highly deplorable that divisive politics is being played by some people over the most reprehensible act of rape and murder of an innocent girl, which has brought a bad name to the whole society,” Akhtar said.

Without naming anyone, Akhtar said instead of trying to whip up communal passions over this shameful criminal act, the law enforcing agencies should be allowed to bring the criminals to justice.
