In yet another attack, two doctors from the Thane Civil hospital were assaulted by a patient and his kin on Wednesday. An angry mob of around 15 persons vandalised the hospital and damaged hospital instruments. The guards later came to rescue of the doctors. The police have detained three persons in this regard.

According to Thane Nagar police, Dr. Javed Khan, 27, a resident of Saki Naka in Mumbai, and the complainant in the case were at the OPD in the Thane Civil hospital along with his colleague when the patient with injuries on his hand arrived for the treatment. The patient and the family members became restless when they were asked to wait for some time. This led to a verbal fight and while being treated the patient and his kin argued with and assaulted the on-duty doctors. The accused have been identified as being residents of a locality in Mahagiri and 15 people have been booked by the police.

"The doctors were treating the patient who had arrived in the OPD, which led to the verbal fight, and soon the doctors were pushed and abused by the patient and his kin," said a Thane Nagar police officer. "The kin of the patient were angry after the doctors asked them to leave and they went on to vandalise the hospital premises and also damaged the instruments kept in the hospital," said the officer.

"We have registered a case under sections 353 (assaulting or obstructing public servant from conducting his duty), 427 (mischief causing damage), 143 (unlawful assembly),147 (rioting), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of Criminal law (Amendment) Act, The Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act, 2010," said MV Dharmadhikari, Senior Inspector, Thane Nagar police station. "We will soon make the arrests in the case and are investigating further",said Dharmadhikari.

On March 15, a mob of more than 20 people vandalised the Central hospital in Ulhasnagar and assaulted an on-duty medical officer and hospital staffers. The Central police arrested one person and have launched a hunt to arrest other accused in the case. Dr. Shashikant Dodhe, 42, the medical officer, was on duty when the mob arrived at the hospital for the medical report after examining two persons in an assault case and demanded a strict report. This led to an altercation between the two parties, eventually ending up in vandalism and assault on the public servants.
