Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is confident that Patidar movement has lost its steam because of the proactive intervention by the government, and that it will not be a limiting factor for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the coming elections to win 150 seats.

In an interaction at his Gandhinagar residence, Rupani said the Mukhyamantri Yuva Swavalamban Yojana has taken care of a lot of youth of upper castes deprived of reservation by sharing 50 per cent of their education expenses. He said the Patidars have also understood that reservation cannot be given beyond the 50 per cent limit.

"Besides, several Congress Patel leaders who have good base among Patidars have joined the BJP; such as Raghav Patel from central Gujarat and Ram Singh from Kheda where the BJP is a little weak in comparison to other districts in the state," Rupani said.

There are signs of a possible landslide victory for the BJP. Though the BJP lost in the first six months after the Patidar movement in the rural belt, it regained the support and has been winning all elections afterwards, including the elections in 10,000 Gram Panchayats where 80 per cent sarpanchs are from the BJP. Rupani said, "In the Municipal elections, we won 119 seats out of 126, and the polls for two assembly seats also went in our favour."

Rupani insisted that the Dalit movement led by activist Jignesh will also not have any impact on the ground as his government has taken tough steps to punish the culprits who were responsible for committing atrocity against Dalits.
