Wearing sports shoes and walking on both her legs, Dravita Singh looked happy. Two and half months after being severely injured due to a fall from a moving train to be run over by train from opposite side, Dravita has finally started walking without any support.

Singh was injured after she fell off a moving local train on February 7, when a thief hit her on her head with a bamboo stick to steal her cell phone. Her right foot and left hand were crushed when she was run over by a train coming from opposite side.

While it will take at least few more months for her right foot to be near normal, till then she will require using a customized footwear which has silicon and foam support. This special footwear will avoid weight on the newly grafted skin of the sole, while the weight bearing will be done by an intact right heel.

Dr Shailesh Ranade, Plastic Surgeon, who is treating Dravita, said, “We have performed skin grafting on her right foot before 6 weeks. She will need to use customized footwear for at least three months. After three months she will be given customized silicone finger prosthesis for her lost fingers of hand as well as cosmetic great toe. After few months, she can walk with the help of any footwear of her choice, though she will have to protect the foot all the time.”

Dravita underwent six surgeries including skin grafting and VAC Therapy, to salvage her crushed right foot. She has lost part of her right foot including great toe as well as skin and soft tissues of a sole as well as dorsum of the foot.

With a smile on her face, Dravita, said, “Everyone supported me due to which I never lost hope to recover from this incident. Being a girl, it is a big deal to suffer from this incident. I have promised my doctor to run Mumbai marathon next year.”

She profusely thanked Dr Shailesh Ranade and his team for making her walk again on her own feet.
