Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra minister Patangrao Kadam died at a Mumbai hospital on Friday after a prolonged illness.

Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra minister Patangrao Kadam died at a Mumbai hospital on Friday after a prolonged illness.

He was 74 and is survived by his son Vishwajeet Kadam, a Youth Congress leader who unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election from Pune in 2014. His wife predeceased him.

Kadam had been put on a ventilator for the past few days as his condition remained serious.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi condoled the demise of Kadam, saying it was an "irreparable loss" to his party.

"My deepest condolences on the unfortunate demise of senior Congress leader and educationist Patangrao Kadam ji. This is an irreparable loss to the Congress party. My love and support to his family in this hour of grief," Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter.

Here's all you need to know about him

Patangrao Kadam was born in a lower-middle-class family in Sonsal village of Sangli district, Western Maharashtra, on January 8, 1944

►  He studied MA and also completed LLB degrees.

► After working as a part-time teacher for some time, Kadam decided to join politics. 

► Kadam contested his first Assembly election in 1980 as an Independent but lost. He managed to win in 1985 as an Independent from the seat which was known as a Congress bastion.

► Kadam later joined the Congress. He was elected to the state Assembly four times from Palus-Kadegaon constituency in Sangli district.

► Dr. Kadam established the prestigious Bharati Vidyapeeth in 1964. Today it is one of the largest and most well-reputed Educational Organizations in India and abroad, with more than 180 educational institutes under its umbrella.

► He held key portfolios such as cooperation, forest, relief & rehabilitation, education and industry under Congress -led governments during his decades-long political career.

► Kadam was chief of the MPCC for some time.

► He also served as chairman of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).

Political Career

Kadam debuted in the political fray as a member of State Road Transport Corporation of Maharashtra. In the early part of his political career, he came to be associated with veteran Congress leaders such as Shri Yashwantrao Chavan, Shri Vasantdada Patil and Shri Yashwantrao Mohite.

He was subsequently elected to the Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly five times (1985-1990, 1991 to 1995, 1999 to 2004, 2004 and onwards). He won the 2004 elections with a thumping majority and in terms of percentage of votes, he topped the list of all the successful candidates in that election.

► October 1999 to October 2004 – Cabinet Minister for Industries, Trade, Commerce and Parliamentary Affairs
