The BJP on Saturday criticised the Election Commission for failing to take steps against Maulana Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi, former V-C of Darul Uloom Deoband, who allegedly made provocative speeches at a Congress meet in Surat district a few days ago.

BJP vice-president Parshottam Rupala said that Vastanvi had made inflammatory statements at the meeting of Congress’s minority cell at Tadkeshwar in Surat last week, and tried to incite communal passions ahead of the elections.

“The BJP criticises the policy adopted by EC to spare Vastanvi. The commission should ensure free and fair elections as prescribed under Article 324 of the Constitution,” Rupala said in a letter to the EC.

The Rajya Sabha MP claimed that Vastanvi had made personal, improper and derogatory remarks against chief minister Narendra Modi at the Congress meet, and violated the model code of conduct.

He said that it is surprising that EC has issued notices to three Congress leaders and a maulana for making communal speeches at the Congress meet, but Vastanvi has been spared. Rupala reiterated the demand made earlier by the state BJP of barring Vastanvi from entering Gujarat till the elections are over.

The Election Commission on Friday issued notices to three Congress leaders and a maulana for making communal speeches at the minority cell meet.

These include Maksud Kazi, general secretary of Surat district Congress minority cell, Kadir Pirzada, member of Congress core committee, Rizwan Usmani, and religious leader Maulana Faiyaz Laturi. They have been asked to explain till October 29 as to why action should not be taken against them.
