Parents of engineering aspirants across the state have petitioned the authorities at the Centre and Maharashtra government to retain the old entrance exam pattern for undergraduate engineering admissions in the state. Parents said that the state’s sudden decision to conduct an entrance on the lines of Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for engineering courses in Maharashtra has created a lot of pressure for students who had already started preparing as per the old pattern.

Around 80 parents from the state have been writing to the authorities urging that the new scheme be implemented from 2019 so that students who have already started preparing for next year’s entrance do not suffer. “The state has suddenly announced that the difficulty level of the engineering entrance would be on the lines of JEE where students would not only have to prepare tougher concepts but would also have to prepare for Class 11 syllabus along with that of Class 12, which was not a part of the state CET,” said Gauri Chaudhari, a parent from Mumbai.

Parents said that despite writing to the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry and several officials at the state, there is no response from them. “It is a matter of concern that even after the announcement has been made, there is no clarity about the exam structure and the marking criteria. Till date, students are unaware of what the exact pattern would be and are thus left in a lurch. The authorities can at least give some clarity about the paper pattern if not postpone it till 2019,” said Sakshi Mulye, another parent from the city.

Parents said that they are planning to move court but are afraid that it would lead to a lot of chaos. “While the Directorate of Technical Education is yet to come up with a set of guidelines, officials said that they will be up soon. “The state has already notified about the change in pattern through a government resolution (GR). Details about the exact pattern and marking scheme would be up soon,” said an official.
