In a fresh bid to resolve the housing woes of the police force, the state home department has floated a committee headed by the DGP to facilitate policemen in forming co-operative group housing societies (CGHS). This committee will provide legal, architectural and other technical support to police personnel who invest in the housing project. The department, however, will not provide them with any monetary support or land.

Besides this, the department in the last one month has cleared 32 pending proposals for construction of houses, police stations and training institutes. Furthermore, to expedite the construction work, the department has handed back the powers to Police Construction Corporation to give administrative orders for construction work. In 2012, during the tenure of former home minister RR Patil, these rights were taken away from the corporation.
However, for construction of houses for serving police personnel, the Hudco has agreed to pay a loan of Rs500 crore to the police housing corporation for construction of houses for the personnel on government land. The loan will be used to construct 5,000 houses with each having a built-up area of 350-450 square foot. The houses will remain mortgaged with Hudco until the recovery of money. As per an initial estimate, each house is expected to cost Rs9-10 lakh. The department, however, does not have to pay any guarantee against the loan. Sources said the project report is to be submitted in a month.
The houses will be available to the personnel against a basic rent, depending on their postings.
Sources claim that housing for policemen is one of the top priorities for chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. Fadnavis, who also heads the home department, allocated Rs298.67 crore exclusively for police housing in this year's budget. The state has 2.2 lakh police personnel.
