Panchayat polls preparation underway in Bengal

The West Bengal state election commission has started preparation for Panchayat election assuming that it would be held in the first half of May this year.

State election commissioner AK Singh has convened a meeting with District Panchayat and Rural Development Officers (DPRDO) of the 20 districts of the state, on March 21. Sources said that in that meeting rules and regulations regarding nomination will be discussed in the meeting.

On March 23, Singh will meet the district magistrates, district superintendents of police and police commissioner. Preparation for panchayat polls and taking stock of law and order situation of the state are on the agenda of the meeting.

Sources also said that the Singh has written a letter to state chief secretary Malay De for more than three lakh poll workers for manning the over-58,000 booths of the state. The commission intends to engage at least five workers in each of the booths and to keep about 10 per cent on reserve to replace ones who fall sick or if there is any calamity. Besides, requisition for 362 observers has also been made. Commission intends to keep an observer at every block. Commission sources said that poll process would be completed in three phases.

Going ahead with the preparations, electoral ink, arrow cross-mark have been procured and three types of ballot boxes – for Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samity and Zila Parishad – have started coming in from Rajasthan, Bihar and Odisha which would be distributed to different districts in the first week of April. Ballot papers will be distributed at the same time as well.
