When the nation was celebrating the 15th anniversary of Kargil war victory, Pakistani army reverted to its old tricks of vitiating atmosphere by violating ceasefire twice in the span of seven hours along the line of control (LoC) in Jammu division.

The first violation occurred on Friday evening when Pakistani troops fired indiscriminately on the Indian forward posts in Mendhar sector of Poonch district in Jammu.

"Pakistan troops violated ceasefire on the evening July 25 when it fired on own posts in Mendhar Sector. The enemy posts used small arms to target own posts from 4.50 pm till 5.30 pm," said Lieutenant Colonel Manish Mehta, defence spokesman at Jammu.

Indian troops gave befitting reply to silence the enemy guns. "Own posts gave a befitting reply by retaliatory fire. No damage or causality has been reported by own troops," he said.

Seven hours later Pakistan troops shifted the gear and violated ceasefire in Pallanwala sector of Akhnoor in Jammu division. "The enemy posts used small arms against own posts from 11.10 pm till 11.15 pm on July 25 July," he said.

No damage or casualty was reported on Indian side in the cease fire violations. "Own posts gave a befitting reply by retaliatory fire", he said. This was the seven ceasefire violations in the last one week in the Jammu division.

Lieutenant General DS Hooda, general officer commanding in chief (GoC-in-Chief) of Northern Command said the ceasefire violations are not of same intensity that was last year.

"There was one ceasefire violation in Poonch-Mendhar and also one in Akhnoor sector on Friday. We had a few ceasefire violations there and they are continuing. Although, let me state that they are not (of) the same intensity as was last year. Last year, the firing was much heavier," he said.

Meanwhile the Vijay DIwas was celebrated at Drass on Saturday. Lt Gen DS Hooda led the nation to pay tributes to the fallen heroes of Kargil by laying a wreath at the war memorial at Drass.

Why is Vijay Diwas celebrated?
It was on this day in 1999 when the Kargil war officially came to an end after Indian army drove out all Pakistani army soldiers disguising as intruders and recaptured the mountain peaks and heights in Kargil and Drass sub sectors in Ladakh division.

Around 527 Indian soldiers were killed and 1360 others were injured in the war that was fought on one of the difficult and inhospitable terrains.
