Pakistan is trying to deliberately rake-up tension on the International Border (IB) to push as many as infiltrators as possible into Jammu and Kashmir in the guise of ceasefire violations, says the Border Security Force.

Four infiltration bids have been foiled by Border Security Forces (BSF) troops since fresh escalation started on December 31 in Samba and Hiranagar sectors.

“There appears to be different attempts of infiltration. Since December 31 night, we have for sure foiled three to four attempts of infiltration. We have a good proof of that. This could be one of the reasons for the provocation. We are on alert. We are watching out. And whenever we feel there is an infiltration bid, we do the needful,” said DK Pathak, director general of BSF.

More than three people, including two Border Security Force jawans, have been killed in the Pakistani firing on the international border in Jammu frontier area. Two army men were killed on the line of control in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district. More than 11 ceasefire violations have taken place on borders since fresh tension started on December 31.

More than 10,000 people living along the borderline have been shifted to temporary shelter camps in Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu division. Schools and other educational institutions have been shut for indefinite period following the cross border firing.

What has added a new dimension to cross border firing is Pakistan's attempt to deflect the attention of Peshawar school attack by deliberately ratcheting up tension on the IB.

“There could also be possibility that they are trying to divert the attention of Peshawar incident because after all they are also accountable to the public. Peshawar incident was widely criticized. May be they are trying to divert the attention,” the BSF chief said.

BSF is also suspecting that the tension on IB might be a deliberate design by Pakistan to escalate tensions in a run up to Republic Day as US president Barrack Obama would be the chief guest on January 26 function.
“May be it is run up to the Republic Day which is not very far. There could be so many reasons,” said Pathak.

BSF reiterated that they would be giving a befitting reply to any provocation since they are mandated to protect the borders and the people living near it.

“They initiated the fire and we have been retaliating. We have been mandated to protect the borders, to to protect the population in the border areas and protect ourselves. That is what BSF is doing. And we are doing it quite befittingly,” he said.
