On Pakistan's Independence Day, the country's High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit addressed the media in Delhi on Sunday.

Basit said, "Pakistan has always made efforts to improve its relationship with India" and added, "Is saal ki Jashn‑e‑Azadi hum Kashmir ki Azadi ke naam karte hain (We dedicate this year's Independence Day to Kashmir's freedom)."

"As far as the relation of Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, we dedicate this year's Independence Day to Kashmir's freedom. We are confident that the sacrifices made by the people of Jammu and Kashmir would be successful," Basit said.

He asserted Pakistan has always given moral support to Jammu and Kashmir's freedom struggle and would continue to do so. "Struggle for independence will continue till Kashmir gets freedom; sacrifice of the people of Kashmir will not go in vain," he said.

His comments come as Pakistan violated the ceasefire at the LOC in Poonch district on Friday night. Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian side along the Line of Control in Shahpu Kandi area of the border Poonch district.

Tensions are running high among the two countries as India virtually turned down Pakistan's proposal for a dialogue on Jammu and Kashmir. On Saturday, India made it clear that it would talk on "contemporary and relevant" issues in Indo-Pak relations and at this time it included stoppage of Pak-supported cross-border terrorism.

While Pakistan's adviser on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz has on Friday said that his country was planning to invite India for a dialogue on the Kashmir issue, ministry of external affairs (MEA) spokesman Vikas Swarup said India would welcome a dialogue only on contemporary and relevant issues, making it clear that there will be no resumption of normal bilateral engagements till Pakistan addresses India's core concerns.

On Friday, Modi's remarked that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir was a part of Jammu and Kashmir.

Kashmir has been wracked with protests against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani last month. The death toll in the ongoing unrest went up to 57 on Saturday. Wani had suffered a bullet injury in the head on August 2 at Lethpora in Pulwama district on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

Normal life remained affected in the Valley for the 37th consecutive day due to the curbs imposed by the authorities and separatist-sponsored strike against the killing of civilians in the security forces action. Mobile Internet services continued to remain snapped in the entire Valley.
