Pakistani snipers killed a soldier in the Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district in Jammu on Saturday morning. Rifleman Varun Kattal, injured at first, was immediately evacuated to a hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

The 21-year-old hailed from Mawa village in Samba district of Jammu. "Rifleman Varun Kattal was a brave and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty," said Defence spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand.

The Army retaliated strongly and effectively on Pakistan Army posts. "The martyrdom of the soldier will not go in vain," the Lieutenant Colonel said.

This is the third ceasefire violation by Pakistan in the last 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir. An Army porter was killed in a sniper fire from Pakistan in Akhnoor sector, while a BSF soldier was injured in Manjakote sector of Poonch on Friday.

Pakistan also violated ceasefire in Tangdhar sector of North Kashmir's Kupwara district. "There was no loss of life or property," said Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar, Senior Superintendent of Police, Kupwara.

The ceasefire violation by Pakistan comes 12 days after Army hit the administrative headquarters in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) using long range heavy calibre weapons.
