Slain Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists Burhan Wani has been declared a 'freedom icon' by Pakistan in a commemorative postage stamp issued by its postal department.

The Pakistan Post has issued 20 “commemorative” postage stamps portraying the slain terrorist, and some others as “victims of atrocities by Indian troops in Kashmir”.

The latest series of commemorative postage stamps have been issued to express Pakistan's solidarity with Kashmiris in their "fight against the Indian oppression."

Along with the images of "victims", the stamps carry captions such as ‘use of chemical weapons’, ‘use of pellet guns’, ‘mass graves’ and ‘braid chopping’.

The caption on the postage stamp carrying the photo of Wani read: 'Burhan Wani (1994-2016) freedom icon'.

According to a media report, the stamps were issued from Pakistan Post's headquarters in Karachi on ‘Kashmir Martyrs Day’, July 24,  to locally and internationally to highlight the plight of people living in Kashmir.

The series of 20 postal stamps are on sale on e-Bay and a few other online trading sites. The stamps are available on e-bay for $6.99 (approximately Rs 500). In Pakistan, the stamps are sold at Rs 8 (local currency) per piece.

Wani was killed in an encounter along with two of his associates by security forces in Anantnag district in Kashmir on July 8, 2016.

The self-declared Hizbul commander was quite active on social media and was involved in recruiting young Kashmiris.

His death had sparked a massive protest in the Valley in which several other people killed in clashes with security forces.

Pakistan has tried to glorify the terrorist in the past as well. In 2017, Pakistan Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa had praised Wani, stating that his death "infused a new spirit in the struggle for freedom" in the Kashmir Valley.

The then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, had called Wani as a “vibrant and charismatic leader”.
