Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate firing on Indian forward positions to facilitate infiltration along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch sector of Jammu division on Sunday.

The incident occurred at 5.15 pm when troops deployed along the LOC detected a movement and engaged in effective automatic fire.

The Indian Army has launched a massive search and sanitisation operation in the area following the firing.

"Pakistan continues in its nefarious designs of supporting and abetting infiltration across the LOC. The Army is keeping a strict and constant vigil across the LOC and is prepared to thwart any nefarious designs of Pakistan sponsored terrorists", said an army spokesman at Jammu.

The ceasefire violation comes a week after Pakistan army resorted to heavy shelling on Indian forward positions and civilian areas along the Line of Control, killing a woman in Pukherni village of Rajouri district.

More than 20 people have been killed in Pakistani shelling near the LoC and the International Border across Jammu, since January 17. While over 60 have suffered injuries, nearly half a lakh people have fled their homes.

The cross border firing comes at the heels of the Army intel revealing that more than 400 terrorists are waiting to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir.

"Their (terrorists) numbers never decrease. There are training camps and launch pads from where they are pushed. If you look at south of Pir Panjal, there are 185 to 220 terrorists and in the north there are 195-220. Once they are pushed and we eliminate them, they get replenished," said Lieutenant General Devraj Anbu, General Officer Commanding in Chief (GOC-in-C) of Northern Command on February 14.
