Pakistan Rangers on Sunday night resorted to heavy and unprovoked shelling on the border outposts (BOPs) and the civilian areas leaving a Border Security Force (BSF) soldier and a six-year-old boy dead, and nine others injured along the International Border (IB) in Jammu division. Around 50 cattle were killed and 180 others injured while 10 structures were damaged when Pakistan Rangers pounded more than 15 villages from RS Pora to Akhnoor sectors using heavy calibre weapons including 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. More than 25 BOPs were targeted by Pakistan Rangers overnight. A BSF spokesman said Head Constable Sushil Kumar sustained bullet injury on his chest when Pakistan violated ceasefire in RS Pora sector on Sunday night.

"He was immediately evacuated to Government Medical College Hospital Jammu where doctor declared him brought dead at 1.30am. Two more BSF personnel – assistant sub inspector RD Puri and constable Ayyappa Babu -- sustained minor injuries and are recovering in the hospital," he said. Before making the supreme sacrifice, Sushil Kumar gave a befitting reply to the Pakistani shelling from his post and was instrumental in suppressing the cross-border firing. "His sacrifice shall be remembered forever. As a peaceful country, we never initiated fire from our side but will never hesitate to give a befitting reply if we are compelled. BSF has the history of bravery and this brave act has once again proved that bordermen are always ready to sacrifice their livee for the nation," said KK Sharma, Director General of BSF.

Head Constable Sushil Kumar has become the second BSF soldier to have died while defending the borders during Pakistan's shelling. Earlier, Constable Gurnam Singh had made supreme sacrifice in the line of duty on Saturday night. "I was told on other side there has been loss of life and property as well. My officers told me that ambulances were seen on Pakistan post Tariq which is opposite to our BOP Chenab. I believe Pakistan rangers suffered damage in our action", said Sharma.

A six year old boy was also killed and his aunt injured when a Pakistani shell landed in Lalyal vallage of Kanachak sector in Akhnoor. Identified as Vicky of Bihar, he was playing in the field when the shell exploded at 8.30 am. His aunt has been admitted in the hospital for treatment. Fear has gripped the border villagers with people in hoards leaving their homes for safer places on Sunday night. "People moved to safer areas on their own last night. People did not report to government shelters but were putting up with their relatives," said Simrandeep Singh, district development commissioner, Jammu. People in different villages took shelter in the newly constructed bunkers to escape from Pakistani shelling. "Particularly the migrant laborers who do not have house of their own use underground bunkers to escape shelling," said Singh.

39 truce violations

Figures reveal that Pakistan has carried out 39 ceasefire violations along the borders since Indian army launched surgical strikes on terror camps in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir on September 29. There have been seven ceasefire violations in the last five days and twice during the last 24 hours.
