Wading into the battle between the BJP and the Congress over allegations by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Pakistan was trying to manipulate the Gujarat elections, the Shiv Sena said repeated attempts to bring in Pakistan and fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in the discourse during polls indicated "intellectual bankruptcy."

Noting that the "Prime Minister should not make allegations but take action," an editorial in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna, which has party president Uddhav Thackeray as the editor and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Rat as the executive editor, dared Modi to take military action against Pakistan.

Alluding to Modi’s charges about a secret meeting with Pakistani officials hosted by former Congress minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, the Shiv Sena also dared Modi to arrest those who were present.  "The Gujarat elections are turning out to be more important than the Kashmir imbroglio,” the Shiv Sena said, adding that allegations about Pakistan was pushing for senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel’s name as the chief minister of the state could raise questions about attempts to polarise voters to win elections.

“In every election, either Pakistan or Dawood Ibrahim is invoked. This is intellectual bankruptcy” the Shiv Sena charged, adding that these bogeys were used by the BJP when it found the going to be politically tough. The editorial noted that during the Bihar elections, BJP president Amit Shah had said that the victory of the Janata Dal (United) under Nitish Kumar would lead to crackers being burst in Pakistan, but the BJP had allied with Kumar later. “In the Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP government worked to the hilt to ensure Ahmed Patel’s defeat. If these same attempts are made against Pakistan, none if its activities against India will succeed,” the editorial said.
