Haryana BJP leader Suraj Pal Amu, who threatened Deepika Padukone for her role in Padmavati and its director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, on Wednesday resigned from the party's state Chief Media Coordinator post.

The Haryana BJP leader had been up and arms against the release of bollywood film 'Padmavati' and had hit the headlines for offering Rs 10 crore for anyone who beheads Deepika and Bhansali.

Earlier, his violent statements had drawn show cause notice from his own party BJP,  asking him to explain his remarks. BJP National Secretary Anil Jain had also condemned his threats on the party's behalf and said the national party is not in support of such threats. A case was also registered against the controversial Haryana BJP leader.

However, Suraj Pal defended his threats saying he made the remarks in his 'personal capacity'. He further said that he was willing to quit party if he was being asked but would not let anyone 'insult' his community.

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus has been marred in a controversy, where a group has alleged that the film 'distorts' the history of Rajput queen Padmini. Rajput Karni Sena (RKS) has been protesting against the film demanding a nationwide ban on its release. Ministers and erstwhile royals are also adding voice to the protest.

Several states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar has banned the screening of 'Padmavati' starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor.

The film was slated for release on December 1. But on Sunday, it was confirmed that the Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period drama has been delayed. The film was submitted to the CBFC for certification but it was returned to the makers because of 'incomplete application'.

The production house, Viacom18 motion pictures, sent out an official release on Sunday confirming the delay in the release of Padmavati.
