Congress leader P Chidambaram, who has been lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail since September 5 after his CBI custody expired, referred to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a medical checkup after he complained of stomach ache.

He was, however, not admitted to the hospital.

Chidambaram was taken to AIIMS around 2 PM and he is there since then. Tihar administration said it was routine checkup and he will return after that.

The former union minister's judicial custody was extended by 14 days on Thursday by a Delhi court. He was arrested by CBI in the INX Media case on August 21 and was sent to Tihar jail on September 5.

Chidambaram, a former union minister who served in various Congress governments in different capacities, is facing probe in cases registered by the CBI and the ED pertaining to alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to INX Media to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when he was the Finance Minister under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

He was arrested by the CBI in August after the Delhi High Court rejected his petition seeking anticipatory bail in the case. He was later sent to CBI custody for interrogation.

The High Court had dismissed Chidambaram's plea asserting that he might influence witnesses in the case. Following this, Chidambaram's counsel, Kapil Sibal, moved a Special Leave Petition (SLP) before the apex court today, seeking urgent hearing into it.

The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the CBI on a plea of Chidambaram against the order of the Delhi High Court that dismissed his bail plea.

A bench of Justice R Banumathi and Justice Hrishikesh Roy issued a notice to the CBI and asked it to file a reply on the plea while posting the matter for hearing next on October 15.

During the brief arguments, senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for Chidambaram, told the judicature that the Delhi High Court in its judgment said there is no flight risk involved as Congress leader will not be absconding. He added that Delhi High Court also decided in Chidambaram's favour that there is no risk of tampering with the evidence.
