The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has rescued over 70,000 children so far under Operation Muskaan, said Home Minister Rajnath Singh. He was speaking at an event where he launched a portal to curb child trafficking. The portal — Platform for Effective Enforcement for No Child Labour (PENCIL) — was developed by the labour ministry to implement the National Child Labour Project.

Singh said that in the last two years, 70,000 children have been rescued. "We are committed to making this country free of child labour, and all must pledge to make India child labour-free by 2022," said the minister. Operation Muskaan, an initiative of the home ministry to rescue and rehabilitate missing and trafficked children, was launched in January 2015.

The portal, developed by the labour ministry to curb trafficking, will have a child tracking system, a complaint corner, and will also host a state government official. District nodal officers will also be appointed under the scheme. The portal, a government release said, was filling up a need to connect the various government agencies from across states, districts and blocks on one platform.

Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi was also part of the event, as well as Union Minister of Labour and Employment Santosh Kumar Gangwar. The conference was also attended by state labour ministers from Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Rajasthan.
