Over a thousand farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra in a matter of five months between June and October 2017, the state government said today.

Subhash Deshmukh, Minister for Cooperation in the Devendra Fadnavis government, said there were 1254 farmers' suicides in the state in five months.

Giving a written reply to a starred question asked by 102 MLAs in state assembly, Deshmukh admitted that only 9.43 lakh eligible farmers have been provided with benefits of loan waiver scheme till December 5, 2017.

MLAs across the parties had asked the question on farmers' suicides and government's loan waiver scheme.

Legislators who asked the question included the Leader of Opposition Radhhakrishna Vikhe Patil, NCP leader Ajit Pawar, Tripti Savant, Sunil Prabhu, Amin Patel, Prakash Fatarpekar, Sunil Raut, Sada Sarvankar, Ashish Shelar, Amit Satam, Subhash Bhoir and others.

Deshmukh informed that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Shetkari Sanmaan Yojana was started from October 18, 2017 and till December 5, 2017, a total loan worth Rs. 8,610.63 crore has been waived for 13.49 lakh farmers and the money has been deposited to concerned banks.

He, however ,made it clear that the banks are now doing the procedure of depositing the money into farmers' accounts. Out of this amount, Rs 5,142 crore has been deposited in to the accounts of 9.43 lakh eligible farmers till December 5, he said.

Speaking to mediapersons outside the Assembly, Mr. Patil said, "Chief Minister Ffadnavis has announced that 41 lakh farmers are provided with benefits of loan waiver package and I have challenged him to provide these names on stamp paper. With Cooperation Minister's reply, it is evident that only 9.43 lakh farmers have received money so far. This proves my allegation that government is misleading people and cheating farmers by providing wrong information every now and then."
