Last chance for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to cling to power died out on Tuesday after National Conference clarified that their offer of support expired the day PDP joined hands with BJP to form the coalition government in J&K.

"It was a one-time offer. That offer expired the day PDP and BJP joined hands. And anyway, I don't have the habit of attending parties that I am not invited to. They do not want my support, why should I be offering it all the time. I am not desperate," said Omar Abdullah, National Conference (NC) vice-president and former chief minister.

On January 13, 2015, Omar in an unprecedented move formally wrote to J&K Governor NN Vohra, offering support to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in a bid to break the political impasse over the government formation in the state.

NC move was seen by the PDP as an attempt to push them into a corner after J&K was placed under Governor's rule on January 8, 2015 following Omar's decision to step down as the caretaker chief minister.

NC had received a drubbing in the 2014 polls with the party winning only 15 seats against 28 in 2008. PDP emerged as the single largest party winning 28 seats followed by BJP with 25 seats. The alliance needed 44 members to form the next government.

"Had PDP accepted our support that time, this bloodshed and destruction would not have been there? That offer does not stand now," said Ali Mohommad Sagar, general secretary of National Conference.

In fact National Conference now wants governor to create an atmosphere conducive for the next assembly polls as soon as possible.

"We do not enjoy this break-up. We are not celebrating. We are mourning the demise of democracy in state. We want at the earliest available opportunity people of state should given a chance to decide their future again. No political party that believes in process of election will ever celebrate imposition of governor's rule. We are not celebrating it either", said Omar.

Omar rued the fact that Mehbooba had to be shunted out rather than saying goodbye to alliance with dignity. "For the last one year I have been telling Mehbooba, look for God's sake please go. As a former chief minister, I personally wish she should have gone with dignity intact. I wish she had chosen to go rather than being shunted out. But she has to live with it. Had she taken the decision, it would have been good," he said
