Organ sale racket: Apollo Hospital sets up committee to investigate

The committee will study the hospital systems and recommend steps to strengthen approval mechanisms.

On Tuesday, Indraprastha Apollo hospital in Delhi stated that they have now set up an independent inquiry committee to investigate the alleged organ sale racket in the hospital. Last week, the Delhi police busted an interstate kidney trade racket and on Tuesday, they arrested three kidney donors. Subsequently, two more people working in the hospital were arrested as well.

According to a New Indian Express report, those involved in the kidney trade racket also include two assistants of a nephrology surgeon at the Indraprastha Apollo hospital. The report also quotes a statement released by the hospital. "In light of the investigation into the alleged organ sale racket in Delhi, Indraprastha Medical Corporation Limited (Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals) has constituted an independent inquiry committee to look into the matter," read the hospital statement.

The daily adds that well-known jurist and Punjab and Haryana High Court's former Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal will head the committee. Forensic expert NC Sood and a renowned medical professional will also be part of the committee. The committee will study the system in the hospital and recommend steps to be taken strengthen approval mechanisms.
