The opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh created a ruckus in the UP Council, demanding action against Cabinet Minister Nand Gopal Nandi for using derogatory references to senior Samajwadi Party and BSP leaders in his speech at Phulpur on Sunday in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Demanding ouster of the minister from the Cabinet, the opposition parties have also lodged a complaint with the Election Commission and an FIR at Gumarganj Police Station in Allahabad for his hate speech and violation of model code of conduct during bypoll campaign.

Campaigning for the BJP candidate in Phulpur Lok Sabha constituency, Nandi had linked senior SP and BSP leaders to notorious characters of epic Ramayana.

He had linked Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav to 'Ravana', BSP supremo Mayawati to 'Surpnakha', former CM and SP President Akhikesh Yadav to 'Meghnaad' and Shivpal Singh Yadav as 'Kumbhkaran' much to the annoyance of the SP and the BSP.

The erring minister, however, defended his utterances saying he had only mentioned a few characters of Ramayana and tried to link them with present day politicians.

Raising the issue as soon as UP Council assembled on Tuesday, members of the opposition parties created an uproar and staged a dharna in the Well, demanding removal of the minister from the Cabinet. The unified opposition protest marked several adjournments affecting business of the Upper House.
