Opposition parties are meeting in New Delhi on February 27 to discuss the Common Minimum Programme (CMP). The meeting, called for by senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel, will be held at the Parliament Annexe at 4pm. Those likely to be present for the meeting are Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, LJD chief Sharad Yadav, DMK’s Kanimozhi, Tejaswi Yadav for the RJD, as well as senior Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi.

Mamata Banerjee on February 13, on the last day of the 16th Lok Sabha had announced that Congress will work alongside other opposition parties to firm up a common minimum programme. As reported by DNA earlier, some leaders across parties, including CPI leader Sitaram Yechury and RJD’s Manoj Jha and NCP’s DP Tripathi, have been working on a document in the last few months alongside Samruddha Bharat Foundation.

A debt relief commission to help farmers with debt, the codification of the conventions of collective responsibility of the Union Cabinet, as well as a demand for the use of VVPATs feature in the document. The first meeting for the Programme was earlier scheduled to be held in Guwahati on February 26. However, the unavailability of Banerjee and Naidu in Guwahati led to a rethink, and consequently it was rescheduled.

A Congress leader from the Northeast said that earlier, a meeting of the Northeast Congress Coordination Committee (NECCC), scheduled to be held on February 21, was first deferred to February 26, to ensure that Gandhi is present in the meet. The NECCC meeting was then altogether cancelled to make way for the CMP meet.  Now, with the CMP meeting rescheduled, the NECCC meeting will be held in Guwahati on February 26, with Gandhi attending it for the first time. Gandhi is scheduled to also address a rally, a meeting of booth workers, as well as the NECCC meeting in his first poll meet in the Northeast.
