Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on Friday said Opposition leaders need to come together to prevent the communal and anti-constitutional forces.

While participating in 'Save Constitution March', Pawar said, "When our Constitution is in trouble, then it will not be appropriate for secular parties to sit ideally. It will be against our country's ethos. We are happy today that the people who believe in the Constitution and secularism have come together for this march," he said. The march started from Dr BR Ambedkar statue near Mantralaya and concluded at Chhatrapati Shivaji statue at Gateway of India.

The march was attended by former Congress president Sushilkumar Shinde, Prithviraj Chavan, Ashok Chavan, Patidar leader Hardik Patel, Congress MLA and OBC leader Alpesh Thakur, Ex MP Nata Patole, Congress general secretary Rajeev Satav, communist leader D Raja and Sitaram Yechuri, JDU leader Sharad Yadav, National Conference leader Umar Abdulla and Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azami. Besides, this march was also attended by various social activists and seniors journalists.

While concluding this silent march, all gathered leaders across the party read out the preamble of the Constitution and vowed that they will fight to protect the Constitution from communal forces.

Pawar, speaking with the media, clarified that this rally was not organised by any political front, but farmer leader Rahu Shetty and NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad. "An all-Opposition party meeting has been called on January 29 where the future course of action will be decided," Pawar informed.

Sushil Kumar Shinde said people, mainly Dalits and tribals, were worried about the Constitution. "They fear that the BJP may distort it to suit their agenda," he said.

CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said people felt that principles of the Constitution had been violated. "We have come together to save the Constitution and we are will get massive people support for this movement."
