As the Bharatiya Janata Party hailed Uttar Pradesh local body results as 'massive victory' and vindication of people's faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies including GST, rival parties got together to hit back and blamed the results, especially of Mayor elections, on EVM tampering.

Social media sites were abuzz with analysis of local bodies results claiming that the BJP's victory was limited to winning 14 out of 16 Mayor posts and on other bulk of posts it had not done too well.

Declaring it as a victory of PM Modi's governance, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met the Prime Minister at his residence in Delhi.

Using the UP results at a rally in Gujarat, BJP national president Amit Shah said, "Whatever has happened in Uttar Pradesh is nothing compared to what is going to happen in Gujarat on December 18. After the (vote) counting on December 18, the BJP will emerge victorious and form the government with 150 seats."

Soon a stinging rebuttal came from veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram as he tweeted, "After media reports on Q2 GDP and UP local bodies, Oxford and Webster should re-define the words 'surge' and 'sweep'."

Raising the pitch, BSP chief Mayawati said she has full confidence that the saffron party would lose the general elections in 2019 if ballot papers are used, instead EVMs.

"If BJP claims that they enjoy the mandate of the people, and the entire country is with them, then they should set aside the EVMs and hold the elections through ballot paper. And, I can say with full confidence that if the 2019 Lok Sabha polls are held by ballot paper, (the BJP) will not come to power," Mayawati claimed.

Joining the chorus Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav too cried foul.

"Interestingly, where the polls were conducted through EVMs, the victory percentage of BJP was 46 but where it was carried through ballots, it was 15 per cent,"he said.

For the record, BJP won 69 Municipal Chairperson posts as against 126 won by others, for Nagar Panchayat President BJP candidates won on 100 posts against 338 non BJP candidates.

In case of Nagar Parishad posts BJP won on 596 whereas 701 were won by non-BJP candidates. Whereas in Nagar Palika BJP secured 916 posts against 4295 by others and in Nagar Panchayat polls it won won- 663 seats in comparison to 4715 won by other parties and independents.

About 70% of the elected representatives of the other posts were independent candidates.
