Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani, who gave a tough fight to the Congress party and came out triumphant in the latter's bastion seat of Amethi, expressed her happiness over the fact that a single BJP worker could defeat the dynastic party.
The woman candidate was not only able to win the constituency, but also was able to ensure a margin of 55,120 votes against her rival Rahul Gandhi.
According to a CNN-News18 report, "For me, it was a matter of satisfaction that while their president and their whole system came down to fight, it took just one karyakarta of the BJP," she said.
Irani further added that the party had started working toward the 2019 polls in 2014 itself. "Did you see the Prime Minister take a single break? You cannot divorce yourself from political realities, from work," she added. Irani was taking a dig at the Congress party that started preparing for the Lok Sabha election only a few months prior to the polls.
As per Irani, 2019 had started long ago in 2014, the report quoted her saying.
Irani showed promise saying Amethi will finally see a representative who visits every village. "We will start from scratch. We will work on health, education, irrigation, clean water, and building of roads," she added.
However, on being asked if she would be offered a ministerial post this time, Irani chose to remain reticent.
This election marks the third time when a non-Congress party has defeated it in its stronghold. In 1977, the post-Emergency election witnessed the first time when BJP won against Congress and then again in 1998.
