Onions from Afghanistan arrive in India to help contain prices

As onion prices are unlikely to remain steady, Indian traders have started importing it from Afghanistan through Attari-Wagah land route in Amritsar.

While around 48 tonnes of onion came from Afghanistan yesterday, reports said about 10-15 trucks of the bulb will start arriving in from that country everyday in the coming days.

India imported onions from Afghanistan in 2013 also when it faced massive shortage of supplies.

Delhi government today announced there is no shortage of onions and potatoes in the city and that the arrival of fresh stocks at the wholesale markets of Azadpur, Ghazipur, Keshopur and Okhla was more than the requirement. Officials said that 1,607.1 metric tonnes of onions and 1,394.9 metric tonnes of potatoes arrived in the city today. Onion was sold today at Rs 13.75 to Rs 25.50 per kg while the modal price was Rs 21.57 per kg. Potatoes were sold at Rs 12 to Rs 22.5 per kg with its modal price being Rs 16.98 per kg. Read more 

Centre empowers states to impose stockholding limits on onion, potato
Union Law and Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today that the Central Government has empowered the State Governments to impose stock holding limit for onion and potatoes. "Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has decided today that onion and potato must be brought in purview of stock holding limit under essential commodity act," Ravi Shankar Prasad said. Read more
