With Opposition Congress and its vice-president Rahul Gandhi upping an ante against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is planning to kick start its first anniversary with a series of press conferences starting from May 22 to June 8. Further, to dispel the notion of being "one-man show," the government is fielding all its senior ministers to drum achievements to put a show of collective responsibility. The Prime Minister will also release of a booklet titled "Saal ek, shuruat anek", showcasing the achievements in multiple fields.

A Cabinet meeting convened on Wednesday will finalise the entire programme of celebrations, a senior minister said. As many as 25 crore copies of the booklet in various Indian languages are planned to be distributed. The booklet was tentatively planned to be released by Arun Jaitley, as the Information and Broadcasting Minister press conference is shifted from May 20 to 22, but indications are that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may himself do any day before his government completes the first year on May 26.

The press conferences will kickstart on May 22, with Jaitley addressing media on the achievements followed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Power Minister Piyush Goel and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. The Communication Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will round up press conferences on June 8, marking the end of celebrations.

Coinciding the official celebrations, Congress is also planning to come out with a booklet on May 25 to counter the government claims. It has already begun holding high-profile press conferences every day from Monday to expose the government. The first high profile leader on Monday is Abhishek Manu Singhvi, followed by former union minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday.

To refute Congress allegations, the government has asked all the ministers, party MPs and legislators to fan out across the country to hold more than 100 rallies as per the plan, sources said. The government will also spread the message about social security schemes and other initiatives launched by it. Modi took over as the prime minister on May 26 last year. The way a battery of ministers have been reacting to Rahul Gandhi's allegation of playing vendetta with his electoral constituency Amethi, a disquiet in the BJP and government is palpable.

At the start of the Budget session, the BJP had pilloried the Congress over Rahul's "vanishing act". But soon after his return from abroad, he has taken the government forcefully. He has been using farmer suicides, crop failures coupled with Prime Minister's frequent foreign trips to the hilt to break political ground.
