Justice A Arumughaswamy, who heads the one-man inquiry commission looking into the circumstances leading to hospitalisation of late chief minister J Jayalalithaa, on Friday assured that the probe would be conducted in a transparent manner. Sources said the head of the commission is likely to start his inquiry from the Poes Garden residence of Jayalalithaa on October 30.

The retired judge of the Madras High Court formally began his probe on Friday with the issue of a notification calling for information in the form of sworn affidavits by November 22. However, it is not clear whether the commission would question Jayalalithaa's long-time aide VK Sasikala who is undergoing imprisonment in a corruption case in Bengaluru prison.

"Those who have personal knowledge about the death of the late chief minister and those who are connected with the issue can furnish information either in person or by post on or before November 22. The information should be furnished with two copies along with necessary documents," the notification issued by Justice Arumughaswamy said.

In the order setting up the commission, the Tamil Nadu government had directed it to inquire into the circumstances and situation leading to the hospitalisation of the late Chief Minister on September 22, 2016, and subsequent treatment provided till her unfortunate demise on December 5. It has been asked to submit its report in three months' time.

Asked whether the inquiry would be completed within the two months remaining, Justice Arumughaswamy told reporters here, "It can be done."

Ever since Jayalalithaa's death, there has been an accusation of foul play in her death pointing fingers at VK Sasikala. A CBI probe was a key demand of the then rebel AIADMK faction led by O Panneerselvam as a pre-condition for the merger of his camp with that of Chief Minister K Palaniswami. On August 17, Palanisami announced that a commission would be set up to inquire into the AIADMK supremo's death. The two factions had merged on August 21 with Panneerselvam becoming the deputy chief minister.
