One person was killed and another injured in a clash over a vacant piece of land in the eastern fringes of the metropolis on Wednesday prompting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to order the arrest of a Trinamool Congress councillor allegedly involved in it.

The government later ordered a probe into the clash.

Police said two groups clashed over a vacant piece of land at Dhapa and one of the groups was allegedly led by local TMC councillor S Kaur.

One person who was seriously injured in the clash later died in the hospital.

Speaking in a rally in Bankura district, Banerjee said, "I have already ordered the police to arrest Kaur. Law will take its own course. I don't spare anyone if anyone commits any mistake."

"It doesn't matter to me whether the wrongdoer belongs to my party or some other party. I am not like CPI(M). Anyone who commits a mistake will be punished," she said.

Later, state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee told the Assembly that the decision for the probe into the matter was taken on the advice of the chief minister.

Chatterjee said the incident was brought to his attention by Leader of the Opposition Surjyakanta Mishra when they were in the Business Advisory Committee meeting.

Mishra earlier moved a calling attention motion on the issue in the state Assembly demanding statement from the government.

Deputy Speaker Sonali Guha, who was in the chair, said that Disaster Management Minister Javed Ahmed Khan had gone to the area and the statement would be made soon.
