One killed, 17 injured as under-construction building collapses in Chennai

A portion of the under-construction building came down crashing after the scaffolding collapsed on Saturday.

At least one person was killed and 17 others injured after an under-construction building collapsed in Chennai Saturday evening. The incident took place in Kandanchavadi area of Tamil Nadu capital.

A portion of the under-construction building came down crashing after the scaffolding collapsed. One dead body was recovered from the debris.

Police said the scaffolding was suspected to have given away due to weight and trapped some labourers after it collapsed.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said that the search had ended from their end.

"From our end search has concluded. One dead body was recovered. 61 personnel were part of this operation," Vinoj, Assistant Commandant, NDRF said. 

Seventeen people were rescued by Fire and Rescue personnel, a police official said yesterday, adding, they were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Out of those injured, five have been left with head injuries. Two are said to be in critical condition. 

Reports suggested that the injured persons could be migrant labourers.
