On Vijay Diwas, PM Narendra Modi remembers sacrifices of armed forces

Expressing his pride over the sacrifices and valour of the armed forces, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday remembered those who fought courageously in the 1971 Indo-Pak War.

"On Vijay Diwas, we remember sacrifices and valour of our Armed Forces who fought courageously in 1971. We are extremely proud of them," tweeted Prime Minister Modi.

Earlier, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar along with the Army Chief Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag, Navy Chief R K Dhowan and Air Force Chief Arup Raha paid tribute at the 'Amar Jawan Jyoti'.

On this day, the eastern commander of the Pakistan Army, Lt. Gen. Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, had surrendered unconditionally to the allied forces consisting of the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini, led by Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora in Dhaka after their defeat in the war.

The end of the war also resulted in subsequent secession of East Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh.
