Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram's son Karti on Friday spent Holi behind bars answering questions of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths in the INX Media bribery case. However, the agency sleuths put tilak with colours on him and the investigating officer ensured that Karti "should not be left in solitude on Holi". Sources claimed that though he initially resisted, he was convinced to put tilak.

Additionally, he was offered special vegetarian food with sweets (gujiya) bought from the nearby restaurant. "It is customary that we ensure the accused in custody is served special food and allowed to play with colours," said a senior CBI officer. He clarified that homemade food was not allowed.

Meanwhile, reports emerged that even as the court order stated that Karti can have medicines on prescription, but not home food, Karti has been throwing "tantrums" in custody and demanded for food from Swiggy or Zomato instead.

Sources said CBI sleuths fired at least 50 questions at him on the grant of approval to INX Media for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Investigators are learnt to have asked Karti about certain government documents that are suspected to have been destroyed in the case.

The agency also asked the names of the public servants he was and is in touch with.

He was quizzed in two rounds during the day while a third round took place in the evening. Sources said Karti has so far denied any involvement in INX Media getting the clearance from Foreign Investment Promotion Board when his father was at the helm of Ministry of Finance.

Order Dictates

  • The court allowed Karti’s lawyer to meet him for one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening.
  • Karti can also have medicines on prescription, but home food will not be permitted
