Omar Abdullah’s National Conference (NC) on Tuesday formally wrote to the governor NN Vohra offering support to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in a bid to break the current political impasse over the government formation in Jammu and Kashmir.

NC move is seen by the PDP as an attempt to push them into a corner after Jammu and Kashmir was placed under governor’s rule on January 8 following Omar’s decision to step down as the caretaker chief minister.

In a communiqué addressed to the governor on Tuesday, NC working president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah informed that his party has offered support to PDP, which has emerged as the single largest party in the just-concluded assembly elections.

“However, the political impasse in the state, due to indecisiveness of the PDP has led to the imposition of governor’s rule and placing the state assembly in suspended animation despite an overwhelming participation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the electoral process,” the letter reads.

Omar also urged the governor to consult the party leadership before taking any final decision regarding the future of the present assembly.

NC received a drubbing in the recent polls with the party winning only 15 seats against 28 in 2008. PDP emerged as the single largest party winning 28 seats followed by BJP with 25 seats. The alliance should have 44 members to form the next government in Jammu and Kashmir

PDP, which is holding informal talks with BJP, was surprised by NC’s move to approach governor with formal offer of support.

“They (NC) are trying to push us into a corner. We will discuss it in our party forum and respond. It is the party which has been routed in the polls. Now, they are in greater hurry than everybody else to form the government,” Naeem Akthar, chief spokesman of PDP told dna.

Akthar, however, reiterated that the PDP will pursue its own line and form the stable government in Jammu and Kashmir. “People have voted for change. They have not voted for NC to be part of the government,” he said.
