Election Commission's decision not to hold Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir simultaneously with general elections has snowballed into a major controversy with former chief minister Omar Abdullah accusing Modi government of "consciously disenfranchising" the people of restive state.

This follows the appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to people to register as voters and exercise their right to franchise in the forthcoming General Elections.

Minutes later, National Conference vice-president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah took to twitter accusing Centre for disenfranchising people by not holding simultaneous polls to assembly and parliament in Jammu and Kashmir

"Dear @narendramodi Sahib, it is good to see you appealing to famous people to increase voter turnout however at the same time your government has consciously disenfranchised people in J&K by not holding Assembly elections on time," Omar said.

Elaborating former chief minister noted that "the right to choose an elected government, as opposed to being governed by a hand picked nominee of the central government, is the hallmark of the sort of democracy you are tweeting about". "Please give us our democratic right to choose our own government," he said.

Election Commission on Sunday decided to hold only parliamentary polls for six seats in five phases in Jammu and Kashmir. Of the six seats, the restive Anantnag constituency will go to polls in the three phases in South Kashmir.

Baramulla and Jammu constituencies will go to polls in the first phase. Srinagar and Udhampur constituencies will go to polls in the second phase. Anantnag constituency will go to polls in third, fourth and fifth phases given the precarious security situation in the south Kashmir region. Ladakh constituency will go to polls in fifth phase.

Election Commission has appointed three Special Central Observers --Dr. Noor Mohammad, Vinod Zutshi and AS Gill --for assessment of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir so that the assembly elections could be held as soon as possible in the state.

Jammu and Kashmir was placed under president's rule on December 20 and as per the law the elections to the assembly has to be held within six months.

Unlike other states, the J&K has to be placed under governor's rule for six months in case of fall of the government or no party or combination is in a position to form the government. J&K was placed under governor's rule in June last year after BJP withdrew support from PDP and amid high drama the Assembly was dissolved in November.
