Ministry of Human Resource Development has asked older Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) to mentor IIM Himachal (Sirmaur) after its mentor, IIM Lucknow backed out from the mentorship.

Citing difficulties in being able to mentor both Jammu and Himachal (Sirmaur) at the same time, IIM Lucknow had early this year withdrawn faculty support from Sirmaur, following which Sirmaur had written to the ministry asking for help.

"IIM Lucknow had conveyed to us about not being able to mentor two institutes at the same time as its faculty is overworked. We have agreed to it and have asked other older IIMs if one of them wants to come forward to mentor Sirmaur," a senior official in the ministry said.

An older institute that mentors new institutes gives faculty support to the new institute and in some cases, even infrastructure. In IIM Sirmaur's case, Lucknow was providing faculty support. Once an institute is able to work on its own after hiring the required number of faculty members and getting the infrastructure in place, the mentor institute withdraws support. However, Sirmaur is struggling with teething issues.
