Mohammad Rais (42) looks and sounds happy, perhaps for the first time in years. The source of this humble e-rickshaw driver's joy is simple. With transportation company Ola taking him on board, he can now send his daughter to school. As part of a unique experiment to provide easy and affordable conveyance in cities, Ola has engaged 300 electric rickshaws in Lucknow under an arrangement with the Akhilesh Yadav government.

"I wanted to give my son good education but could not. Being a rickshaw puller (earlier), I didn't earn much. But now I will be able to send my daughter to school," says Rais. He hopes to earn about Rs 500 a day with Ola's infrastructure providing him frequent bookings.

Ola, the popular app used by people to commute in over a hundred cities, has already hired 100 e-rickshaw drivers and plans to engage 200 more soon. Apart from carrying out their thorough background checks, the drivers have been trained well, too.

"Every e-rickshaw driver-partner on the Ola app goes through a KYC verification and training across behavioral, etiquette and technology to ensure complete customer satisfaction," an official spokesman said.

Lucknow is the second city in India to get e-rickshaws on the Ola app, after Delhi-NCR, where it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April this year. "The e-rickshaw would be particularly useful for Lucknowites considering the traffic congestion, and the narrow roads and lanes one has to negotiate," says a traffic police official.

"We are constantly building mobility solutions to suit the unique needs of Indians. At the same time, we are enabling hundreds of thousands of men and women take their first step towards entrepreneurship. The launch of e-rickshaws on the Ola app follows the company's MoU with the government of Uttar Pradesh to introduce innovative commute options for citizens across the state," says Sundeep Sahni, Vice President, New Initiatives, Ola.

"We are using cutting edge technology to upgrade cycle rickshaw peddlers as skilled e-rickshaw driver-entrepreneurs by introducing smart mobility solutions like e-rickshaws, that are not only affordable and environment friendly, but also add to the larger mobility ecosystem for the convenience of citizens. We are excited to bring innovative solutions to fast growing cities like Lucknow, in line with our mission to build mobility for a billion Indians," he added.

The Ola e-rickshaws would be available in Lucknow at rates which are rather affordable. Commuters would be charged Rs20 for the first kilometer and Rs 8 per km thereafter making the service very useful for short trips. Apart from e-rickshaws, Ola is already offering multiple cab options like 'Sedan', 'Mini' and autos.

For added convenience of the e-rickshaw drivers, the Ola app for them is available in eight Indian languages including English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu, making it extremely convenient and user friendly for local drivers to use.
