Of 117 elected MLAs, 16 face criminal charges

Seven of the 77 MLAs of the Congress who were elected to the 15th Vidhan Sabha in Punjab face criminal charges, as deposed by them before the Election Commission.

As per the analysis done by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) from the affidavits submitted by the candidates to EC, of the 117 MLAs who were elected, 16 face criminal charges, with 11 of them facing serious charges including that of murder, attempt to murder and robbery.

Of the 16, nine are from Congress, four from AAP, two from AAP's alliance partner Lok Insaf Party (LIP) and one from SAD. One of the MLA from Congress, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkari faces charges of crime against women.

The number of elected MLAs who face criminal cases has marginally come down, compared to 2012 Assembly elections, but it is significant to note that only 101 out of total 1,145 candidates who contested elections this year had declared criminal cases against them.

In 2012, 19 MLAs had declared criminal cases against them. This year, the number has marginally come down to 16.

Sugar baron Rana Gurjit Singh, who won on Congress ticket from Kapurthala, continues to be the richest MLA in the 15th Vidhan Sabha, followed by SAD president Sukhbir Badal and AAP's victorious candidate from Sunam, Aman Arora. Former cricketer Navjot Siddhu and Arora are the two MLAs who have declared an annual income of above Rs 1 crore.

The dominance of wealth in politics remains evident, as 95 of the 117 MLAs elected are crorepatis. The average of assets per MLA is Rs 11.78 crore which is similar to 2012, when the average assets per 117 MLAs analysed was Rs 10.10 crore.

Women presence in the Vidhan Sabha remains marginal, with only six of the 81 women who contested making their way to the Assembly.
