Odisha police today directed its force to remain neutral and honest while on duty during the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

"The police have a major role in upholding the democratic rights of the people apart from maintaining law and order and protecting their life and property," Odisha DG Prakash Mishra said.

The DGP also said that police have a major role in upholding the democratic rights of people and it is important for them to remain neutral and honest while performing duties during the elections.

Speaking on the occasion of the state police foundation day celebrations here, Mishra said that the Naxal issues, organised crimes, economic and cyber offences are now the major challenges before the state police.

"We need to remain highly alert to meet any eventuality arising out of these problems," the DGP exhorted.

Similarly, the DGP asked his force to be more 'responsive' while providing policing service to poor, disabled, SC and ST, minorities, senior citizens, children and women in the state.
