A day after five resident doctors were suspended from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) following the death of a nurse during a caesarean procedure, a high voltage drama took place at the premier medical institute on Monday. The hospital administration got stuck between the resident doctors and the nursing union members, both of whom threatened to go on a strike to press forth their demands.

On Monday afternoon, members of the Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) gathered inside the campus to protest against the decision taken by the administration. An eight-member committee, to be headed by Professor SC Sharma, was formed to look into the matter. It will submit its report on February 15.

"The AIIMS administration had a long discussion with both the unions following the unfortunate demise of one of our nursing officers. The administration has taken the incident very seriously and has suspended five resident doctors in this regard. It has also constituted a broad-based 8-member inquiry committee, under the chairmanship of Professor SC Sharma, (HoD, ENT), with Professor DK Sharma (MS) as the Member Secretary, and two members from outside AIIMS. No decision has been taken regarding the suspension of the resident doctors. That status quo remains," an AIIMS spokesperson said.

The committee also has one member each from the RDA and the nursing union. Meanwhile Sukhlal Jat, a member of the nursing union, said nurse Rajbir Kaur, 28, was admitted to the hospital on January 16 for a normal delivery. Sources said five doctors who were on duty in the operation theatre, however, decided to perform a caesarean surgery as there were some complications in the case.

During the procedure, Kaur lost her baby and suffered a cardiac arrest. She was then put on life support. She died late on Saturday night. The nursing union then went on a strike, demanding suspension of the five doctors.

Dr Vijay Gurjar, President of the Resident Doctors' Association, AIIMS, said: "The administration's order seems to have been announced under the pressure of the nurses' union. The administration should revoke the suspension.

If the administration does not listen to our demands, we will have no option but to go on a strike."

A member of the nurses union retaliated, saying, "We do not accept the proposal to revoke the suspension of these five resident doctors. If they are released, we will be forced to go on a strike."

Meanwhile, the police have said that a post-mortem will be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death.
