With a Kashmiri face in its top leadership, Congress's student wing National Student's Union of India (NSUI) is reaching out to students in Kashmir's colleges to connect them with their peers and institutions in other parts of the country.

NSUI's national president Fairoz Khan, who is from Kashmir, says he understands the problem of the youth very well and wants to connect with them in a better way.

"We are trying to act as a bridge between students and the administration in Kashmir and to establish their faith with community in other parts of the country. The problem there is students do not easily trust people in position of power. There is a whole lot of trust deficit there, which is why the situation is not improving. We feel that if a student body is able to bridge that gap things can improve," said Khan.

The student wing has devised a plan to connect with the youth of Kashmir, where they have 30,000 members, making it the largest national student party in the region where the RSS's student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has practically no presence on campuses.

As part of its outreach, the NSUI is planning student exchange programmes and interactions with Kashmir's students.

"We have planned student exchange programmes and interactions with senior leaders in the party with the students in Kashmir to develop a sense of confidence within students," Khan said.

After students clashed with security forces in Pulwama Degree College in South Kashmir in April, protests across campuses have been a regular affair. Most student unions are banned in Kashmir.
