NRC internal matter of India, we got assurances: Bangladesh

Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque has said that the National Register of Citizens or NRC in Assam is an internal matter of India and that they have got assurances from New Delhi. 

Speaking on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's India visit, Haque said there has been progress on many fronts in the relationship between the two countries. 

"We have made tremendous progress over the years and charted a new course for the next year. As you know next year PM Modi is likely to visit Bangladesh,There is very solid progress in every possible front business trade water just name one," he said. 

When asked if Bangladesh is about NRC in Assam, Haque said, "we are not worried but certainly, we are keeping a close eye on the development and as I have told you, Indian authorities have assured us, its an internal matter an will remain an internal matter. As a friendly country, we like to believe that."

On the question if South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) figured in the talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh PM, the Bangladeshi foreign secretary said, "Regional cooperation issue came up in the discussion. Both PMs agreed that regional cooperation is essential beacuse are the only area, which is south Asia, globally which has the least regional cooperation."

He added that in the context of regional bodies, there is more focus on BIMSTEC.

Prime Minister Modi his Bangladeshi counterpart held an hour-long meeting in New Delhi and major outcomes were seen in energy and defence. 

Issue such as Teesta water-sharing agreement, Rohingya issue and NRC or citizen's roll in Assam were also discussed during the bilateral between the two leaders.
