Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who is facing legal proceedings for alleged loan defaults by his group to the tune of over Rs 9,000 crore, on Sunday said that he is being hunted down by media in UK.

Taking to micro-blogging site, Mallya said, "I am being hunted down by media in UK. Sadly they did not look in the obvious place."

"I will not speak to media so don't waste your efforts," Mallya added.

A day ago, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda tried to downplay the controversy surrounding Mallya, saying that the liquor baron is not running away from country.

"Vijay Mallya as a person was born in Karnataka and is from a reputed family. Subsequently in business there may be some areas of mistakes and the matter has been subsequently discussed in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha," Gowda told the media persons here.

"There was no reason to target an international businessman like Mallya," he added.

Earlier, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had came out in support of embattled Kingfisher boss, saying there was no need to arrest the business tycoon as he was a "gentleman" and would return to India on his own.

Vijay Mallya had on Thursday said he is not an absconder and he will comply with the law of the land. "I am an international businessman. I travel to and from India frequently. I did not flee from India and neither am I an absconder. Rubbish," Mallya tweeted from an undisclosed location.

He further said: "As an Indian MP I fully respect and will comply with the law of the land. Our judicial system is sound and respected. But no trial by media."

He also sought to shift the blame to the media, saying: " Once a media witch hunt starts it escalates into a raging fire where truth and facts are burnt to ashes. Let media bosses not forget help, favours, accommodation that I have provided over several years which are documented. Now lies to gain TRP?."

Mallya also questioned news reports that he must declare his assets.

The Enforcement Directorate(ED) has issued summons for appearance to Mallya besides questioning a senior executive of Kingfisher airlines.
