One more colour has been added to the categories of Indian passport. Those with emigration clearance requited (ECR) status, henceforth will be issued orange colour passport jacket and those without ECR will continue to get blue passport.

There are already two more categories — white passport for government personnel Indian government on official business and ones with red jacket for diplomats including top political representatives, MPs and officials of diplomatic status in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

In response to a query, the MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar stated that in pursuant to recommendation of a three-member committee comprising officials of the MEA and the Ministry of Women and Child Development, it was decided to do away with the printing of information such as names of father/legal guardian, mother, spouse, and address contained on the last page of the passport. Under the new scheme, the passport will no longer be a document as proof of address.

It was found that at times mother and even child insisted on not mentioning the name of the father in the passport. There were also issues related to passports issued to children with single parent and to adopted children.

"The Ministry has examined the recommendation of the committee in consultation with the various stakeholders, examined the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regarding Machine Readable Travel Documents, and decided that the last page of the passport and other travel documents issued under the Passports Act, 1967 and Passport Rules, 1980 would no longer be printed," said Kumar.

The last page contains information such the name of the father, mother, spouse, as well as address, ECR and old passport number with date and place of issue of the passport holder.

Currently, the first page of the passport has the photograph as well as other details of the passport holder; the address is printed on the last page.
